This past Monday, September 26th the Scotch Plains Planning Board listened to almost four hours of testimony before unanimously approving the plan submitted by the owners of Bowcraft and ATA Developers.  The plan is to redevelop the amusement park into a 200 unit townhouse and apartment complex.  This new complex will have a pool, clubhouse and a children’s play area.  Forty-one of the housing units will be designated for affordable housing, this will bring Scotch Plains closer to the number required by COAH (Council on Affordable Housing) as mandated by State Law.

Several experts gave testimony about the development plan, including a civil engineer and traffic engineer.  Their reports state that the new plan will create an access type road, that will eliminate traffic during peak hours.  According to Mayor Glover: “This will be a welcome addition, given the alternatives. We didn’t need another gas station or convenience store.”

Sadly, the Union County landmark that has been a part of so many memories for children of all ages will soon be no longer.  No timeframe has been given for when Bowcraft will seize operations or when construction on the project will begin.  As those details become available we will report them.
